Reminder

I took some pretty good photos walking the streets of Paris. Some will be made into fine art prints and sold, otter will go to Getty. As good as they are, I doubt i will put them on my site thought

Generation Instagram has always felt that taking something they like which was found on internet and posting it without permission on their page is sort of victimless crime.

It is not. Permission must be given, otherwise you are literally stealing. If you are an artists wanting to use someone else’s work, get the permission in writing as to protect yourself; since the artist granting permission could have sort buyer’s remorse bout lending an image. Or not care until project takes off, feeling something more owed them. This is why its also important have every aspect of collaboration or usage spelled out in contract beforehand,

I do not copyright every single doddle I create but I do with all my fully realized pieces. This by no means is a forcefield against people trying use your world without permission. However, it makes it far quicker and easier to have stolen stuff taken down. And should it come to actual legal proceedings, I can personally attest, it makes things move far quicker.

The life of an artists has enough trials without taking on things which are preventable and can be protected against.

Paris Painter II

The lighting in my new studio is different, but I feel I have a handle on it now. I am well into the swing of things. I’ve mostly been using my semi new to me pocket pad for painting. Drawings been spread out all kinds of paper. 4×4 inches

I discovered a new to me paint company. They have been around since 1830. Among many greats, Matisse and Renoir got their watercolors from them. They remain very artisan. Just looking at the paints you see the difference in pigments. They also have proprietary colors.

paints are not paints, each hue has its own distinct properties and then this varies even more from company to company.

Not knowing if I would like them, I just bought five to try. This is why on my first piece skin doesn’t have volume & mass I usually achieve. I instantly liked the paint, it handles diff than anything else I have used. Decided to go all out, new 5×7 paper, new paint.

R (Adventure of a Paris Painter 1)

For the first time in a decade I’ve had to change my Parisian studio. Gone the view of the dome for Val de Grace and the enormous bird who sleeps in the windowbox among the geranium, his throaty song heralding dawn.

I was a little sad of course. On the other hand in warmer weather once past the noon hour I would not have to paint clad in a sarong and tee shirt or risk baking like a potato.

I am still learning the light in new place, ideal times to paint.

Here is my first piece, watercolor and pocket pad 4×4 inches. I was pleased with the results.

Zam-Zam

This is my last painting in America for a while. It is Watercolor & French cotton paper 5×7. (As has become my practice I will use whatever paint is left in palettes to do a pocket pad piece too)

I was very pleased with how it came out.

Memory Museum

Anyone who has followed my blog or social media pages knows that I have largely eschewed the too prevalent “buy my stuff” postings. I want an audience, not customers.

Showing what I do is easier with my visual work than my writing. With that, I do once or twice a year call attention to a new release. Not a bad average in trying not to annoy or pressure for those who take the time to follow me.

My latest release is just out. It is available for Kindle & paperback on amazon Most likely I have said this with the last three releases, truly, this is a personal favorite.

Shimmy Shimmy Ya

I am in the process of getting the release of my next collection ready. And, I am few weeks out from returning to Europe, so I can not devote massive amount of time required by Cinefield® work. The actual work involved in creating a piece aside, I can’t have my studio take on the inevitable sprawl of sheets of tiny cut out shapes which is part of the process.

Instead I have been doing paintings which is different but as rewarding for me.

Each Cinefield® has been different from the previous and sometimes, time between creating them actually can help. As does going to different places to take my raw material photos.

Here is my latest painting. French cotton paper 5×7 inches & watercolor.

Evelyn

The release of my next collection is roughly two weeks away. Because of this and wanting to take different photos to serve as Cinefield® fuel/raw material I am mainly painting right now.

As to keep myself engaged, I keep switching size(s) and types of paper.

My latest is watercolor on French cotton paper (cold pressed) 5×7 inches. I was very pleased with this piece which is now a personal favorite. No matter how often I do it, the portrayal of flesh in my work always gives me the greatest pleasure.

Whammer (Selfie)

Finished my painting. I had actually done a study for it beforehand which is not my usual way of working.

A bunch of us used to sit around and play games which were tied in with the life of being an artist. One was: describe your technique or mission in one sentence. For me it has always been “The gooniness of flesh”.

I want to show the heat generated by the flesh, the blood coursing below the surface, the splotches, the bruises.

Probably couched in grandeur terms, this was one aspect of the power of the work by the tronie painters as well as the mannerists painters. Even Jenny Saville’s earlier work has elements of this beauty and power.

I often do self portraits as showing myself as I am does not offend nor disappoint me as it may were it someone else emerging from my brush.

It is a truth and truth for me is always beautiful.

It is 11×17 Watercolor on tan paper.

Northern Symphony

Finally finished my latest CINEFIELD®. Although it felt as if it took forever, I am very pleased and proud of the results.

The entire piece is from a single photo which I personally took and then printed up many times. I used my trusty pair of (tiny) scissors to cut out the pieces and then glued them to 11×17 piece of paper using adhesive and small brush.

My goal was to offer up a work that one could go back to many times and notice a new thing each time. I always have the design in mind beforehand but which piece I use where is completely discovered in the moment. I cut out sheets of tiny shapes which are arranged on a table by what will become the work. In this way you can look at all my complex CINEFIELD® as completely improvised.

Northern Symphony 11×17 (C) Wayne Wolfson. Not for use without permission

Addendum: I used to live in a city that often had weekend “art walks” or art & wine block party type things. There would be kiosks for photographers etc who had “art” but each thing was reproduced hundreds of times and in various sizes. There is nothing wrong with this so long as you realize it is less buying art and far more in line with buying a postcard/poster/print.

I have CINEFIELD® prints available but each print is only done twice and one of the two is for my own archive. My site goes into all technical details. I have gotten emails asking what is available as the site currently only lists a few as available. If there is a Cini you are interested in get in touch with me, it could be that I just had not had prints made yet.

Drawings

Full ahead into my next Cinefield®. Of course still drawing every day. I do not seek out things with a specific vibe. I would like to think that when not portraying someone from within my circle, I am a sort of spokesmen for those who have slipped through the cracks, the lonely, forgotten and outsiders.

My regular subjects intuitively know I enjoy that sort of convulsive beauty. I am fortunate that they trust me to present me with such honesty.

Poet laureate of the forgotten & ignored or from within my circle, either way, it’s raw reportage. I do not seek to beautify nor take down any subject.
